For more details see README.more and the manual on the CD, as well as the support section on www.lokigames.com. ----- Sound ----- Q) There is no game sound. A) First, check all your connections between your speakers and your computer. Make sure your speakers are turned on and receiving power. Make sure the volume is not turned down all the way. You can change sound and music volume in the 'Game Options' window. If none of the above suggestions works, try producing sound in another program. If that does not work, make sure you have the sound driver enabled in your kernel. Finally, go to http://www.opensound.com/ to see whether a commercial driver is available for your sound card. ----- Video ----- Q) I get a message: "hg2: FATAL: unknown resolution mode: -1". A) Make sure you're using the 'hg2_demo' script and not executing 'hg2stub' directly. If you are doing this, make sure the file options.cfg in ~/.loki/hg2_demo/ contains meaningful information in a readable format. Q) I get a message after the game loads about "rendering taking too long". A) First, follow the instructions that are listed in the message. Is the rendering library compiled with hardware support? Do you have MESA_GLX_FX set to 'f' if you're using a 3DFX? If you *are* using hardware rendering, or you want to see the game in software rendering, then pass the '-t' flag into the game. This will disable the software rendering auto-abort. Q) Heavy Gear II DEMO locks my video card. A) You probably have an old 3DFX X server. It doesn't like DGA mouse, which the game uses. Upgrade to at least 3.3.5 from http://linux.3dfx.com. You can also turn DGA mouse off by exporting the variable SDL_VIDEO_X11_DGAMOUSE with a value of '0'. E.g., $ export SDL_VIDE_X11_DGAMOUSE=0 $ ./hg2_demo -o libMesaVoodooGL.so.1.2.030300 Q) Heavy Gear II DEMO still locks my video card. A) Try disabling DGA mouse: $ export SDL_VIDEO_X11_DGAMOUSE=0 $ hg2_demo Q) Heavy Gear II DEMO appears to leak about 70 megs of memory per run! A) You're using an older Glide which never unmapped it's PCI control registers and texture memory. Use Glide-2.60-14 or greater. Q) Heavy Gear II DEMO's textures are all smeared. A) You may have an older version of the NVIDIA or ATI Rage Pro Utah GLX drivers. These drivers did not support the glTexCoord4f() call properly, but have since been fixed. Upgrade your currently OpenGL drivers to fix the texture smearing. Q) I can see the far clip plane! A) Your OpenGL driver may not support fog properly for orthographic projections. Please consult your driver vendor for a fix, or use the vertex alpha based fogging by specifying '-x' when you start the game. Q) Everything is kind of misty! A) You may have turned OpenGL fog on for a driver that does not properly support fog in orthographic projections. Please consult your driver vendor for a fix. ----- Input ----- Q) How do I map my mouse buttons to control actions? A) Go to the control configuration screen, double click on the action you want to change, then click the "Key List" button. Scroll down the list of keys until you see a list of mouse buttons. Click on the one you want to bind to the action. Heavy Gear II DEMO supports up to 5 mouse buttons. They are mapped as follows: left middle right wheel-up wheel-down Mouse Button: 1 3 2 4 5 Q) How do I configure my wheel mouse? A) You need to edit your X server configuration, set an advanced PS/2 protocol for your mouse and map the Z axis to mouse buttons. This is described in detail at: http://www.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/ Once the wheel is mapped to buttons, the buttons can be mapped normally. Q) How do I get my joystick to work? A) First, you need to make sure the joystick driver version 1.2.12 or newer is compiled in your kernel and working properly. The Linux 2.2 and 2.3 series kernels come with a compatible joystick driver. The driver and utilities are available from the Linux joystick homepage: http://www.linuxgames.com/joystick/ You need to calibrate your joystick using the 'jscal' program included with the joystick utilities. This is the only joystick calibration program that is known to work with Heavy Gear II DEMO. Q) How do I map my joystick to control actions? A) Go to the control configuration screen, double click on the action you want to change, then press the button or move the joystick axis you want to bind to the action. If your joystick is working properly, the joystick motion will be automatically detected. Q) Does Heavy Gear II DEMO support joystick trackballs? A) Not at this time. Q) How can I use the hat on my Logitech Wingman Extreme analog joystick? A) This joystick is detected by the Linux driver as an analog 3-axis 4-button joystick. You need to tell Heavy Gear that you are using a Wingman Extreme by setting the SDL_LINUX_JOYSTICK environment variable to "'Analog 3-axis 4-button joystick' 2 1" Calibrating the hat on this joystick is a little tricky. The hat is actually the third axis, with the minimum position being the hat in the up position, centered being the hat pushed down, and the maximum position being the hat centered. Q) Is there anyway to undo a change to the sensitivity slider in the Control Config screen? A) There is no way to undo a change to the sensitivity slider. You must manually restore the original setting. ----------- Multiplayer ----------- Q) Why was another player's name replaced by the word "UNKNOWN" while I was chatting with that player in the lobby? A) This occurs when that player either times out (due to a crash or loss of connection), when the player leaves the lobby and deletes that pilot, or when the player's name hasn't been transmitted yet. Q) Why don't guided mortars give you points when you kill the Beacon holder in a Steal-the-Beacon game? A) Multiplayer games were designed to raise the gameplay challenge to a higher level. Since splash damage is an easy method to make kills, the designers decided that these kills should not count on the point system. Q) Why is the text jumbled on the Multiplayer stat screen? A) This is a display issue that is occurring because a user name is too long. It is suggested that user names be restricted to no more than fifteen characters. Q) Can both teams in a multiplayer game use the same camo? A) No, if the same colored camo is selected for both teams, the shell will automatically assign a different color to one of the teams. Q) Why are players using guided mortars allowed to enter a game that restricts users from using guided weapons? A) The Guided Weapons restriction only applies to Anti-Tank and Anti-Gear missiles. Use the Indirect Weapons restriction to prevent players with guided mortars from entering a game. Q) I joined a Duelist game in multiplayer, and could not customize my Gear. What happened? A) Currently, there is a loophole that allows the "Custom Gear" restriction to be carried over from a Deathmatch into a Duelist Match. The host can resolve this by creating an entirely new game instead of modifying an old game setting. Q) I was the captain of a team game, and the Navpoint Alpha I created moved to another location. What happened? A) Since it is a team match, the checkpoints are "Team Property" and can be changed by any member of the team. It is best to request that your team refrain from changing the Nav Points set by the captain except in the case of an emergency, or when the team captain authorizes it. Q) I clicked launch, but the game never launched. What Happened? A) You may have clicked on some other active area of the screen. This can remove you from the launch queue without actually returning your launch button to active status. You should back out of the game and attempt to come back in to clear this up. Q) I tried to join a game, and after about a minute, I got kicked back to the Connection Type screen, and now the Continue button won't work. What happened? A) If the game has just ended, it may still appear on the list for a few seconds. If you try to join it then, you will have this problem. To clear it up, just back out to the Main Menu, and return to multiplayer as usual. Q) I was killed on top of a building/object while holding the Flag or Beacon. Now it seems to be inside that object. How can I get it back? A) Some buildings can be destroyed, and you can get the Flag/Beacon back by walking through the rubble to pick it up. If you cannot destroy the object, then you can wait for it to respawn back at its starting point shortly. Q) I'm holding the Flag/Beacon. Why does my HUD tell me that it is still three meters away? A) The tracking device for the Flag/Beacon is in the top of the flagstaff, which is three meters from your sensor apparatus. Q) I had a weapon locked on an enemy, and when I fired, the weapon fell well short of the target. Why? A) Depending on your sensors and fire control systems, your Gear can achieve a lock at extended ranges. -------- Gear Lab -------- Q) Why are Gear renamed to "Current Config" whenever I edit them? A) "Current Config" is used as a temporary placeholder until you have completed your modifications and are ready to save your variant with a new name. Because "Current Config" is just a temporary designation, you must rename your variant every time you complete modifications to it or you risk losing your additions. ----------- General Sim ----------- Q) After setting up NAV point Alpha in the HUD using the laser, why isn't it showing up as soon as it is set? A) By using the laser in the HUD, you set up Alpha as a check point and not a NAV point. As a result, it will not automatically display as the active "NAV" point. However, the check point can still be viewed in the HUD by cycling through the NAV points by using the "N" key. Q) During some of the missions, it appears that my squadmates are not giving me enough information about the current objectives, what should I do? A) The VO is triggered by specific events that occur within the game. If it seems as if you are not hearing enough information from your squad- mates about what to do in a mission, revert to hitting the "O" key to display the mission objectives. ------- Weapons ------- Q) Why doesn't the "R" key target the enemy under my reticle when I'm using a guided weapon? A) "Target Under Reticle" will only work when you have a non-guided weapon selected as the current weapon. If you are using a guided weapon, you can still use "Cycle Target" to cycle through the other targets. ---------------------------------- (5) CONTACTING LOKI SOFTWARE, INC. ---------------------------------- To order the full version of the game, contact your local software reseller or buy online directly from Loki Software, Inc. at: http://www.lokigames.com/ Technical support for the demo is available from Loki Software, Inc. at: FAQ: http://faqs.lokigames.com/ Website: http://fenris.lokigames.com/ The full product has e-mail and phone technical support available.
