Before launching the installation program, please mount the Railroad Tycoon II CD. e.g. Log in as root: mount /mnt/cdrom sh rt2-1.54b-ppc.run -------------------- (3) PLAYING THE GAME -------------------- Run 'rt2' to start the game. The first time you run Railroad Tycoon II it will create a .loki/rt2 directory in your home directory. Saved games and preferences will be stored here. The following arguments may be given to Railroad Tycoon II: [-h|--help] Print this help message and exit. [-v|--version] Show release information and exit. [-f|--fullscreen] Use DGA instead of an X11 window when run as root. [-w|--windowed] Use an X11 window instead of DGA when run as root. [-c|--nocdrom] Prevent access to the CDROM. [-s|--nosound] Disable sound output. Use Ctrl-G to toggle mouse grabbing. Use Ctrl-Z to iconify the game when it is run in a window. Use Alt-Enter to switch between fullscreen and windowed modes. The Print Screen key will save the current screen to the ~/.loki/rt2 directory. If the Print Screen, Pause, or Alt-# keys are not working, make sure your window manager is not overriding them. String widgets have standard UNIX keybindings. Ctrl-A - Move to beginning of line Ctrl-E - Move to end of line Ctrl-B - Move backwards Ctrl-F - Move forwards Ctrl-U - Erase line Ctrl-D - Delete character Ctrl-C - Copy to X clipboard Ctrl-V - Paste from X clipboard Dragging the middle mouse button will move the playfield. ---------------------- (4) MANUAL ADDENDUM ---------------------- The following notes explain or clarify concepts in the manual. A) Spanning Bridges To build a spanning bridge across open ocean, simply drag the track across a body of water in track laying mode, as if you were laying a long stretch of track. Spanning bridges must be straight. They are expensive, at $120,000 per section. Spanning bridges can only be single track, not double track. B) Cargo Depoting The flags shown on the train detail screen at each stop in a train's route let you change the manner in which the train handles cargo for which there is no demand at that stop. The flag settings do not affect the handling of demanded cargo in any way. Cargo which is demanded at a station is always sold upon a train's arrival there. You can get around this if you want by building a small station outside of town somewhere with no nearby buildings and no demand for anything and using it as a storage facility. You don't need to adjust the cargo flags at all. The default setting covers most situations quite well. Changing the flag for a station changes how the train will handle undemanded cargo at that station. Since the train configuration on arrival was set up at the previous station, this can seem a bit tricky. The following is an example of how to use the flags: A Shay engine (slow, but works well in the mountains,) is running a route near Albany, picking up coal at two different stops, Ithica and Corning, and dropping it off just outside of Albany at Albany Depot. None of the stops has any demand for coal. (Stop 1) Consist = 4 coal cars Ithica Depot flag = Yellow (leave undemanded on the train) (Stop 2) Consist = 4 coal cars Corning Depot flag = Yellow (leave undemanded on the train) (Stop 3) Consist = 1 caboose Albany Depot Depot flag = Red (store undemanded at the station) The train will start at Ithica, pick up whatever coal is there (let's say 1 load), and move on to Corning. At Corning, there is no demand for the coal the train is carrying. The yellow depot flag tells the train to leave that coal on the train. The train will try to fill its remaining 3 coal cars. Let's say there are 2 more loads at Corning, so the train loads those and now has 3 loads. It travels to Albany Depot. Albany Depot has no demand for coal either. The depot flag at Albany Depot is red, so the 3 loads of coal are stored at this station and may be picked up by any train coming into this station. Our example train switches consist to a lone caboose and travels to Ithica to restart its journey. Note: If the train's consist at Albany Depot had remained 4 coal cars, then the the loads it had stored there would have been immediately loaded back on and would have been carried back to Ithica. If you're storing cargos at a station, be sure not to leave that type of car on the train, or it will haul away what you were just trying to store. Also note: If the consist at stop 2 had changed to a lone caboose, then the coal hauled from Ithica would have been sold at Corning regardless of the yellow "leave on train" flag. Obviously, if the train is no longer carrying the right type of car, then the cargos cannot be left on the train. C) Towns and cities now accept produce and coffee directly (no cannery required) through 1878. ------------------- (5) TROUBLESHOOTING ------------------- The following are some of the more common problems you might have, and recommended solutions: A) Program displays 'Unable to set up video mode' message Railroad Tycoon II requires a screen resolution of at least 1024 x 768. Virtually all desktop PCs sold since fall of 1996 (and most since 1994) are capable of this resolution. If your PPC or powerbook cannot display that resolution, then you won't be able to play Railroad Tycoon II. B) There is no game sound. First, check all your connections between your speakers and your computer. Make sure your speakers are turned on and receiving power. Make sure the volume is not turned down all the way. You can change sound and music volume in the 'Game Options' window. If none of the above suggestions works, try producing sound in another program. If that does not work, make sure you have the sound driver enabled in your kernel. Finally, go to http://www.opensound.com/ to see whether a commercial driver is available for your sound card. C) The screen scrolls sluggishly - overall performance seems slow. Go into 'Game Options', and in the 'Graphics' section, lower the detail settings. D) Video playback is a bit too slow and choppy. All of the video files are in the directory /anim on the CD. If you copy them to the directory /anim that the installation process creates in the main Railroad Tycoon II directory, they'll play directly from the hard drive, which should improve performance. E) I get 'Out of Sync' messages when I'm playing multi-player. The game must keep all data synchronized across all machines playing in a multi-player game. Sometimes the system loses synchronization. You can continue to play, but often this will destabilize the game. The best course of action is for the host to save the game and for everybody to return to the main menu and relaunch using the host's saved game. In general, having more players, both human and computer, tends to increase the chances of losing synchronization. ------------- (6) PPC NOTES ------------- This patch upgrades the Linux / Intel 1.54 version of the game to the PPC 1.54b version. Here are the changes from the 1.54 version of the game (which was never released on PowerPC) : - Fixed crash when the AI is creating companies. - The server IP address is now properly used in finding network games. - You can now network with more than 2 players. - Defaults to fullscreen by default; the new fullscreen code does not require root privileges anymore, and should work on any XFree86 and compatible X11 server with at least the 1024x768 video mode defined in the XF86Config file. Use the Alt-Enter hotkey at any time to switch between fullscreen and windowed modes. - Proper CDROM detection on systems using supermount (Mandrake) - CD-ROM volume settings are now saved between games - The CD-ROM is now detected if it is mounted while the game is playing. - Fixed splash screen appearing over main menu in fullscreen mode - Fixed 32-bit fullscreen blitting crash (new optimized C blitters) - Now clears screen during campaign videos - Fixes campaign map corruption for maps 08 through 15 - Fixed X shutdown when the game crashes and is started from menu As of version 1.54b, the PPC version of Railroad Tycoon II has the following limitations : - Network play is not supported. ------------------------------------------ (7) CONTACTING LOKI ENTERTAINMENT SOFTWARE ------------------------------------------ Technical Support Support for Railroad Tycoon II - Gold Edition is available from Loki Entertainment Software at: Bug Tracking System: http://fenris.lokigames.com/ Website: http://www.lokigames.com/ Follow the links for support.
